This past week we got the chance to finally see Broadway Musical, Once on This Island! Once on This Island tells the story of Ti Moune, a orphan peasant girl living on an island. The name of the island is never explicitly given, but we assume it’s a French Caribbean island. Throughout the show, Ti Moune, is a stick to her guts, or heart kinda girl as she tries to figure out her place in the world, as well as risk it all in the name of love.
Guiding her and also thwarting her are 4 Gods; the Goddess of Love, Erzulie; Mother of Earth, Asaka, Demon of Death, Papa Ge, and God of Water, Agwe.
From the dancing, to the vocals, the acting and even the set design, Once on This Island is the Broadway show that should be next on your list!
Earlier last month, Cove Lounge, a Caribbean inspired restaurant and lounge in West Harlem, welcomed the cast and crew, including two new cast members Norm Lewis, who plays The God Agwe, who you might’ve also seen in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway and Tamrya Gray, who plays the Demon of Death, Papa Ge, who was a past contestant on American Idol and finished in a close fourth place in its first season.
The night was put together to celebrate Once on This Island’s community culinary outreach in presenting Cove Lounge’s new Caribbean-inspired cuisine and cocktail menu, while supporting Once On This Island through a series of fun and interactive promotional activities!
The partnership will start today!, February 1st, at Cove Lounge, located at 325 Malcolm X Boulevard and W. 126 Street.
